See the two images above? Which would you rather pay for? The one on the left, I used Digital Ice, and the one on the right, I edited in Photo shop. Here's 3 reasons why I do not use short-cuts to edit your slide, negative, photo scans.
1. All Scanners Do The Same Thing
It doesn't matter if you have a $200 scanner, or a $3000 scanner. They all do the same thing. They all scan at very high resolutions.
Scanner manufacturer's know this. So, what do they do to compete with the next guy who sells the same thing? They add bells and whistles.
They call these bells and whistles, Digital Ice, ROC, DEE, Scan Enhancements, etc. These quick-fixes help sell their scanners because it promises less effort and better "quality".
But here's the rub. Any professional scanner doesn't rely on a scanner to edit scans. Sure, scanner's are amazing at scanning pixels. But they aren't built for EDITING pixels.
2. Digital Ice Is A Quick Fix, Nothing Else
Most scanning companies rely on speed. The faster they can scan your slides and photos, the more money they make. For them, time is money.
This is where Digital Ice helps. It cuts your editing time. You press a few buttons, and presto-- faster scans, less effort.
So you think.
3. Digital Ice Does More Damage Than Help
The problem with Digital Ice it TAKES away detail. Why care? Well, have a look for yourself. Would you pay for these scans?
Digital Ice is simple. It looks for dust and scratches and fills them in with the same colour that is around that scratch or dust.
But it does not know the difference between detail and dust. Have a look:
Oh, check out what Digital Ice did here.
Digital Ice "thought" the whites of the eyes were dust. So it filled it in.
Other issues are with colour. Sometimes what should be green, turns out purple. Here's an example:
No matter how much I tweak Digital Ice, I can't fix the purple-green issue. I can get better results if I edit the digital image in Photo shop.
All Scans Are Guaranteed 100%
Instead of relying on Digital ICE, I use Photo shop to edit your scans. This is how I can guarantee your scans, 100%.
